Correspondence with Alfred Thayer Mahan, naval officer and historian. The early letters portray the developing characters of the young men, both educated at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; later letters comment on naval affairs. Includes photographs of both as young men. In addition the collection contains a biographicl sketch of Mahan prepared by Ashe in 1930 and several letters concerning the Samuel A. Ashe Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
